Creative Adventures With Homemade Clay: Fun Projects for All Ages

I recently went down a sculpture rabbit hole and discovered a world of Home Made Clay.

I recall when my kids were younger mixing up a batch of Playdough with salt and flour, But as you may know its a very childish form of sculpture. Not the best way to get a material that you can work some detail into. And so on my search to find a more adult form of clay, I Stumbled into a world of Home Made Clay.

Its basically just flour, Water, Glue, paper, and plaster of paris, I researched quite a few recipies and settled on this one:

  • 5 boxes of soaked egg cartons

  • 1/2 cup PVA Glue

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (70 grams) to start

  • 1 tablespoon boiled linseed oil (optional)

  • 1 cup Plaster of Paris.

Soak your egg cartons for a few hours and then shred them into pieces. Once you got a pulp going, drain the excess water and add the remaining ingredients. This is a very intuitive recipie. You know what you want to make, so play around with the consistency and add what you need to get your desired results.

Once you have your clay, You can get to work and start to play. Yep I said Play. I had no idea what I was going to make, but I came out with a pretty cute sculpture if I may say so myself. Your sculpture will take a few days to completely dry. I'd say minimum of 3 days, so this is not a task for the impatient. Once its completely dry, you can finish it off how you wish. I decided to paper mache mine, but it was good to paint as it was.

Art is a Journey. We dont always know where we are going or what will come of things, but we can sure have fun along the way!
